Flyers unofficially nab G-Nabby (for now)

The Flyers may have just found their next goaltender.

According to CSNPhilly.com, the Flyers have a verbal agreement in place with the San Jose Sharks to acquire the rights to goaltender Evgeni Nabokov.

According to the source, the verbal deal in place states that the Sharks will receive a seventh-round selection in the 2011 NHL entry draft if Nabokov is signed to a deal prior to the July 1 free-agent period.  If not, the Sharks get nothing and thirty-four year old Nabokov will become an unrestricted free agent.  Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren and Nabokov’s agent Don Meehan are expected to begin talks immediately.

Known has one of the better regular season backstops in the NHL, “Nabby” as he’s known, earned a 44-16 regular season record in 2009-10 to go along with his 2.43 goals against average and .922% save percentage.

Nabokov is coming off a $5.4 million dollar contract and will likely need to accept a decline from that for the Flyers to ink him.

while i would love to add nabokov (if we had him this year, we’d probably still be parading on broad street), i dont think he is the best option for us…unless he agrees to a huge salary reduction. i’d rather get a younger goalie like schneider, quick or bernier…even if it means giving up carter. but if we get nabby for 2-3 years at no more than 4 mil per season, i’ll get over it.

next question – what are we going to do with the defense? i see pronger, carle, timonen and bartulis as the only dmen under contract. coburn is rfa so he’ll be back with a reasonable raise. but that’s only 5 dmen. we need to pick up at least 2…who are they??? can we expect any prospects to be promoted???

    • Right now the defense looks similar to last season.

      Carle – Pronger
      Coburn – Timonen
      Bartulis – UFA

      UFA/prospect

There are a number of blue liners who fit what the Flyers want, which is a physical, reliable work horse. The problem is what they want to be paid.

Some of the names I’d expect to be in play are

      Andy Sutton
      Derek Morris
      Henrik Tallinder
      Zybnek Michalek

I believe Anton Volchenkov will want too much money, although he, like Hamhuis, would be perfect for what the Flyers want.

tthose are some nice names for sure!!! i would love to sign two of them…not just one…so that bartulis is the 7th dman. i’d prefer michalek and volchenkov…but would settle for tallinder and morris. sutton is last resort.

or you know…kaberle would be nice! hahahaha!
