After playing his 39th game in a Flyers’ uniform against the St. Louis Blues Saturday, the Flyers have officially announced that rookie defenseman Luca Sbisa has been sent back to his junior team, the Lethbridge Hurricanes of the WHL. Luca was incorrectly reported by Canadian news sites to be sent back to Lethbridge during the All-Star break.
“We feel that it is in the best interest of Luca and the Flyers organization that he gets back to playing on a regular basis,” said General Manager Paul Holmgren. “Luca will join Lethbridge for its game in Portland, Oregon on Wednesday.”
According to the CBA, after 40 active games in uniform for the Flyers, Sbisa would have shed one year of restricted free agency, making him an unrestricted free agent a year sooner. If Sbisa was not going to play regular minutes in the orange and black, Holmgren felt that it was best for Sbisa and the Flyers to make sure the 18-year old would see regular time on the ice with the Hurricanes to continue improving, while staying in the Flyers’ possession a year longer.
