According to a newspaper in Sami Kapanen’s hometown of Kuopio Finland, the miniature speedster told the paper he will not return to the Flyers to fulfill the final year of his contract, and will return to Finland to play in the Finnish top tier league SM-Liiga.
Kapanen spent a successful five years with the Flyers, tallying 44 goals and 66 assists. Last season Kapanen’s play was on the decline, as he found himself playing mostly fourth-line minutes and specializing on the penalty kill.
“It’s true. I’m retiring from the NHL and planning to play for KalPa in Finland.” he said. “I will miss the Flyers but it’s time to move on.”
The loss of the veteran gives the Flyers a fourth line roster spot to fill and 1.25 mill. to add to the cap. The Flyers will miss Kapanen, but the departure was somewhat expected.
